Clinical Terms: Respiratory System

Cheyne-Stokes respiration-  irregular breathing pattern of a series of shallow breaths that
increase in depth and rate, followed by breaths that decrease in depth and rate.

 

Dyspnea-  difficulty in breathing.

 

Eupnea-  normal breathing

 

Hemothorax-  blood in the pleural cavity.

 

Hypercapnia-  excess carbon dioxide in the blood.

 

Hyperventilation-  prolonged, rapid, and deep breathing.

 

Hypoxemia-  deficiency in the oxygenation of the blood.

 

Hypoxia-  diminished availability of oxygen in the tissues.

 

Lobar pneumonia-  pneumonia that effects an entire lobe of a lung.

 

Pleurisy-  inflammation of the pleural membranes.

 

Pneumoconiosis-  entrance of air into the space between the pleural membranes, followed by the collapse of the lung.

 

Rhinitis inflammation of the nasal cavity lining.

 

Sinusitis-  inflammation of the sinus cavity lining.

 

Tachypnea-  rapid, shallow breathing.

 

Tracheotomy-  incision in the trachea for exploration or the removal of a foreign object.
